Elf on the Shelf is a rather new Christmas tradition and it’s based on a book written by Carole Aebersold and Chandra Bell. The tradition became popular in the US and was later adopted in the UK, too. The whole thing is designed to make the kids behave, as these elves are said to have been sent by Santa to all homes, so they can report whether they are naughty or nice.
Parents are supposed to put the elf on a shelf at the beginning of December and tell the kids that he’ll be watching them. They have to move the toy around the house, to make it seem like he’s popping up in different places.
